(AP) — A company that made contaminated pet food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide will pay $3.1 million in a settlement with pet owners, an attorney said Friday.

The pet food, which contained a mold called aflatoxin, was produced at Diamond Pet Foods' plant in South Carolina. The company will set up a fund to reimburse pet owners for the loss of their dog, veterinarian bills and the cost of any unreturned contaminated food, said attorney Jim Andrews, who represented a Knoxville, Tenn., family that sued the company.

Diamond Pet Foods, based in Meta, Mo., acknowledged that workers at its Gaston, S.C., plant failed to follow internal testing procedures to ensure its products were safe. The company made the acknowledgment after the Food and Drug Administration released a report showing the company has no record of test results for 12 shipments of corn in 2005, when grain tainted with the deadly fungus slipped into the plant.

The company contends it did nothing illegal, according to the settlement. Mark Schell, Diamond's assistant general manager, did not immediately return a telephone message.

Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and in other crops, can cause severe liver damage.

The contaminated pet food was sold in 23 states. Diamond recalled about 20 varieties of dog and cat food when a New York veterinarian said in December 2005 that she had linked a dog's death to the company's food.

The 2005 recall is unrelated to the contamination problem that prompted recalls of more than 100 pet-food brands in early 2006. In that case, investigators traced pet deaths to a toxic chemical, melamine, that had been added during manufacturing in China.

On the Net:
Diamond Pet Food Settlement: http://www.recalledpetfoodsettlement.com/
Diamond Pet Foods: http://diamondpet.com/

Diamond Pet Food | Dogs | Million Dollar Settlement
Pet Owners | Corn | Contaminated
Pet Food Recall | South Carolina Plant

Rover Alert by 95SX

As a resident of Charleston, SC, I have to give a huge thumbs up to radio station 95SX. I recently noticed that I haven't blogged about anything since announcing the release of DogHouse Covers in early November! November pretty much flew by as we focused on promoting our newest creation, designer slipcovers for dog crates.

However, this December has been dedicated to taking care of Cody. Cody, for those of you that don't know, is the single reason DogHouseProperties.com exists. Having relocated to California from the East Coast, we had a very difficult time find a pet friendly rental with him (our wonderful, gentle 85 lbs Labrador). Cody helped us realize that pet owners deserve a resource dedicated solely to them.

On December 5th, we noticed that Cody wasn't acting like his cool, calm and collected self. Watching his behavior, we assumed he had a seizue and rushed him to the emergency vet's office. A few tests revealed Cody's spleen ruptured due to a tumor. He was experiencing internal bleeding and was kept overnight for monitoring. The following day, Cody underwent surgery and had his spleen and the tumor removed.

The doctor informed us a week later that Cody's tumor is in fact malignant. Cody, our beloved 7 year old Lab, is living with Hemangiosarcoma - a highly malignant form of cancer. While our doctor removed the tumor, it is expected to spread into other major organs in the near future.

Dogs that live with Hemangiosarcoma have a short life span after diagnosis, usually up to 1 year. The news has been devastating, but we know we have given Cody the best life we could possibly give him. From spending his days at Three Dog Bakery with his dad...to having DogHouseProperties.com built in his honor. We love Cody and cherish every waking moment with him that we can. Cody has had a speedy recovery after surgery and is doing well given the circumstances.

Please enjoy this holiday season and remember to tell your dog (or cat) that you love them!

DogHouse Covers | Designer | Crate Cover | Cody
Labrador | Gentle | DogHouseProperties.com
Spleen | Rupture | Seizure | Internal Bleeding
Tumor | Surgery | Malignant | Hemangiosarcoma
Cancer | Major Organs | Three Dog Bakery

Avoid Foreclosure, become a Pet Friendly Landlord

As a former mortgage lender, I saw the mortgage bubble at its peak. Homeowners put everything on the line in order to have a piece of the American dream. However, some did not make the most informed decision and placed themselves in risky mortgages. Now, millions of homeowners are expected to hit foreclosure in the next year.

With an oversupply of homes on the market, finding a buyer to bail you out is going to be a gruesome task. Instead of looking for a quick sale, consider keeping your property as a rental. Even better, consider renting your property to a pet owner. In addition, the product reduces anxiety, barking, and stress during crate training, while making the crate aesthetically pleasing in the home.

Dog House Properties LLC, who also owns www.DogHouseProperties.com, has developed Doghouse Covers; stylish crate covers for metal dog crates inspired from the most popular colors and patterns found in major home design magazines.

Research shows crates (also known as kennels) are an effective way to assist with dog training, serve as a safe haven for the pet at home or when traveling, and also prevent or rectify problems associated with destructive behavior. By nature, dogs are “den” animals and covering a crate can alleviate anxiety, barking, and stress during the early training years. As a result, pet owners initially purchase metal crates to train dogs, and do not realize that dogs build an attachment to their crate. Allowing a dog to maintain its crate throughout its entire life can help a pet live a longer, happier life.

Creator behind Doghouse Covers Rebecca Suarez says, “We realize the benefits of covering a dog crate, but often ignore how it can detract from even the most professionally designed homes. Many pet owners spend a lot of money on the look and design of their home. Doghouse Covers were developed as an attractive and affordable way to transform the training crate into a long-term stylish bedroom for your dog, in addition to matching the décor of most homes.”

Doghouse Covers will be available in 3 different styles and are easily machine washable. The covers will fit dog crates from 22”-49”in Length and fit the majority of dog crates on the market including Midwest, Precision, Four Paws, Petmate, and more. Suarez adds, “Our crate cover serves many purposes. It can assist Real Estate Agents in covering chunky dog crates during showings, hide crates while entertaining guests during parties, double as a coffee or end table, and yet, still provide a comforting space for the family dog.”

Doghouse Covers has enlisted Nexsen Pruet Adams Kleemeier, LLC in Charleston, SC to prepare and file the design patent. The patent is currently pending. Suarez says, “What makes our crate cover unique is the ability to easily roll up and tie off any side of the cover when the dog is inside the crate. When entertaining, you can roll all sides of the cover completely down and zip it up so the metal crate is out of sight. Most importantly, the 3 different styles compliment sophisticated or everyday home decor.”

Beginning early December, the dog crate covers can be purchased online at www.doghousecovers.com or locally at Three Dog Bakery downtown (430 King St. Charleston, SC 29403). The covers will retail from $36.00-$69.99 and will come in 6 different sizes, ranging from XS-XXL.

In addition, any purchases made on www.doghousecovers.com by November 25, 2007 can receive 10% off by entering coupon Launch2007 during checkout. The covers will ship in time for Christmas.

Dustin Guthrie, owner of Three Dog Bakery, says “Until now, pet owners have not had an appealing option for covering metal crates. It’s time to take the old blankets and towels off your dog’s crate and cover it with one of these classic styles. With the Holidays right around the corner, Doghouse Covers will make great gifts for any pet owner.”

About Dog House Properties, LLC:

Dog House Properties, LLC, formed in 2005, owns DogHouseProperties.com and DogHouse Covers. DogHouseProperties.com is an internet-based search engine which showcases only pet friendly apartment and vacation rentals. Not only do they positively affect people with disabilities and help during terminal illness, they now help rehabilitate inmates in prison.

Tennessee is now incorporating dog in their rehabilitation program for inmates by implementing a new state prison system program called A New Leash on Life. Inmates spend about eight weeks teaching dogs basic obedience so that the dogs will be more adoptable.

Rocky Mount Telegram recently reported on the program.
Darrell Jones, a case manager at Nash Correctional, runs the program, and he calls it a win-win for both the dogs and the inmates. The program is designed to not only promote social well-being for the prisoners, but also to make the pups more attractive to those looking for pets. The dogs are taught basic commands and walking on and off the leash, talents that not many shelter dogs have, Jones said.
Several inmates were interviewed about the New Leash on Life program and many reported that working with dogs gives them more self-esteem, makes them feel appreciated, teaches them responsibility and establishes prestige within the inmates (the inmates have to undergo strict screening guidelines to be eligible to participate in the program).

Other states like Texas are also including dogs in their rehabilitation programs. Their program is called Paws in Prison, and is very similar to Tennessee's program. The Paws in Prison program held their first graduation ceremony in August; 5 of the 6 dogs have been adopted. Best of all, there has been a 63% drop in inmate disciplinary incidents since the program's implementation!

Rehabilitate | Inmates | Prison
Tennessee | A New Leash on Life | Dogs
Texas | Paws In Prison

Arf! The little dog was having a hard time adjusting to her cats. With the best interest of the dog at heart, Ellen gave the dog to her hair dresser (who has children). That family absolutely adored the dog and welcomed it with open arms.

Moms and Mutts called Ellen to check on the dog and Ellen told them the truth. They took the dog from the hair dressers home because it was apparently a violation to their "adoption contract." It is so disappointing that this supposed non-profit adoption agency has a clause that they don't adopt small dogs to families with children under the age of 14. How can you have the word "Mom" in your non-profit and not allow children??????

Ellen DeGeneres | Adopt | Dog | Cats
Paws Boutique | Pasadena | Non Profit
Hairdresser | Children
Moms And Mutts | Contract

America's Most Friendly Cities

Straight from Forbes.com:
Americans love their pets, shelling out more for food, supplies and veterinary care than they do on consumer staples like beer, ice cream, cosmetics and golf--some $36 billion annually. The combined total of cats and dogs in the U.S. is estimated at 163 million, or more than one for every two people.

But how many owners factor in Fido's or Fluffy's happiness when it comes to choosing a place to live?

For those who do, some cities measure up better than others. And Colorado Springs, Colo., tops our list of America's Most Pet-Friendly Cities. Generous public space, ample veterinary care and wealth of pet-friendly retailers all added up to heaven on earth for this small metropolis of just under 400,000 people and their estimated 61,000 dogs and 54,000 cats.

To find out where pets and their owners are most welcome, we measured the country's 50 largest cites to see which had the most public park acreage, including those parks tailored specifically for dogs (the second most common pet after cats and the ones that require the most outdoor facilities), the most pet supply and service businesses, and the most veterinary facilities. We also looked at which cities typically charge the least for veterinary care. We measured the statistics on both a per capita basis, or against each city's human population, and on a "pet capita" basis--against the city's estimated pet population. Those cities with the most vets, public parks, dog parks and pet businesses, both per person and per animal, shot to the top of the list.

Colorado Springs ranked in the top 20 in all the categories. The city has more than 10,000 acres of public park space, or almost a tenth of an acre for every pet. It also features seven dog parks and 113 veterinarians.

Colorado Springs fits a profile common to the top 10, a list of small- to medium-sized cites with a median population of 507,000 people. The list includes Portland, Ore., Albuquerque, N.M. and Charlotte, N.C., cities with a sought after sweet spot: They're large enough to draw lots of pet shops, vets and public parks, but small enough not to drown out such amenities with overly dense populations.

While large cities like New York and Los Angeles rank very high in total park space, for example, both are near the bottom on a per capita (and "pet capita") basis. New York is also the most expensive city in which to care for a pet, followed by major metros Boston and San Francisco.

The most pet-friendly among cities with populations of over a million is San Diego, which ranks 13th overall and sixth in public park space per capita/pet capita.

One factor that was considered but ultimately not included in the rankings was air quality. While cleaner air would seem inherently healthier for cats, dogs and birds, their relatively short life spans and their ability to make do in most any climate makes the issue moot, according to experts.

"Animals can generally adapt to anything humans can," says New York City veterinarian Richard Green.

And while no official statistics exist that track the number of pet-friendly rental dwellings in various cities, those in the apartment business say the trend is going the pet owners' way. The roots go back to the last real estate slump of the early 1990s, when building owners fought off low occupancy rates by allowing pets.

"People were almost desperate to fill their apartments, so they decided to either take pets or to relax their restrictions somewhat," says Lisa Trosien of Apartmentexpert.com.

No doubt, the relative lack of high-rise buildings in smaller cities also plays to pet owners wishes, since smaller, lower-to-the-ground units usually have more lenient rules. Throw in a nearby park and a pet store on the corner, and life is good for small city pet lovers and their their furry friends.

Colorado Springs | Forbes | Best City for Dogs
San Diego | Portland, Oregon | Albuquerque
Pet Friendly | Cody | Havana | Doghouse Properties

Dress Your Dog in Costumes for Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about what you are going to dress your dog as. Costumes have become increasing popular over the years, as more options become available.

There are many options for dog costumes available; the funniest ones I have seen are hotdogs, pigs, and doctors. In addition, the prices for dog costumes seem to be more reasonable than in previous years. We usually find better quality costumes at local pet boutiques, than at mass retailers - just personal preference. If you are looking for a pet friendly Halloween costume, try checking out your local store. Cody and Havana always do!

If you have a picture of your dog in costume, send it on over!

Dogs | Pet | Costume | Halloween
Pet Friendly | Cody | Havana | Doghouse Properties

DogsInDanger.com Shows Number of Unadopted, Euthanized Dogs

According to Itchmo.com,

A new dog adoption website, dogsindanger.com, uses a different and more forceful approach to persuade people to adopt dogs from shelters.

The site publicizes how much time animals have left before they are euthanized if they do not find a home. There also is a counter in the corner which states how many dogs have been killed in the time that you have been on their website.

The people behind dogsindanger.com believe their website is the first to take this kind of more direct approach. They hope that focusing on the fact that many of the dogs that don’t find homes will be euthanized will influence people to adopt them.

On the website, there is also a memorial with names, photos and dates that euthanized dogs died.

“This is happening … in our country, in our back yard,” said Alex Aliksanyan of The Buddy Fund, the group behind the website. “It’s been kept underneath a blanket of niceness and sweetness. So we said, ‘Lets put the truth in front of the consumer — either do something about it, or at least realize you’re a partner.’”

He also added that dogsindanger.com is not a place that parents should look for dogs with their children.

“It’s not a happy site with puppies running around. It’s not meant to be that,” he stated. “We’re taking it the other way around. We’re saying these pets are going to die. Look at their faces.”
This is one of those sites that opens your eyes to the reality behind euthanized dogs. If you are looking for a dog to adopt, so they aren't euthanized, call your local humane society or visit petfinders.com.

dogsindanger.com | Euthanized | Unadopted | Dogs
Dog | Rescue | The Buddy Fund | Adopt
Humane Society | PetFinders.com

Austin Dog Owners: Don't Chain Your Dog To a Fence

According to Austinist.com,

Starting October 1, it will be illegal to leave dogs unsupervised and chained or tethered in lawns. The City Council passed the ordinance in June; pamphlets telling people of the new ordinance were sent along with utility bills in August.

Animal control won't be heading out randomly to houses, but will be working on a complaint-driven basis. Once a complaint is made to them by a neighbor or someone else, a warning notice will be given to the residents who are chaining up their dogs. If a dog owner still doesn't comply after notice is given, they could be fined as much as $500. The idea is that this new ordinance will keep dogs with their owners, but under more humane circumstances.

A fund has been set up by Animal Trustees of Austin, Inc. and the Austin Community Foundation to help low-income residents pay for adequate fencing for their dogs. If you'd like to help out, you can make a donation to the Dog Fence Fund on the Austin Community Foundation site.
I hope this law spreads throughout the United States!

Austinist | Fence | Tie | Dogs
Dog | Outside | Animal Control
Animal Trustees of Austin
Austin Community Foundation | Ordinance
Pet Friendly | Doghouse Properties

Pet Trends at SuperZoo Trade Show

While we planned on going to the SuperZoo Trade Show in September, some last minute things came up and we couldn't make it. So, we have to live the event vicarously through other people that were in attendance.

Funstufffordogs.com had an excellent, thorough review of SuperZoo. I have her thoughts below:

Some of the winners of the NPP in my view were these items:

The Comfy Cone, a thick fabric e-collar for post-surgery. Unlike the plastic cone, it’s flexible. And, you can fold back the edge to let your dog see better. We’ll have that available on FunStuffForDogs.com within a week or so.

Smell Goodies, a daily tablet that is clinically proven to eliminate doggie smells from the inside out. It improves breath and body odor, which keeps furniture, beds and carpets smelling fresher, too. I’m trying out a two-week supply on my collie, who has (sorry, Raleigh) radioactive breath. We’re on day two. I’ll let you know how it works. The manufacturer told me he’d call me in two weeks. If it works, I told him I’d order two cases. Stay tuned. I can say that you have to put it in a treat such as cheese or peanut butter (which the package advises) because the tablet itself is not appealing to dogs. And if it gets wet, the green color can cause discoloration. But I’m in the swing of it now, feeding one tablet a day in a bit of peanut butter. So we’ll see what happens.

A floor bell that dogs can ring when they want to go out. I’d seen the bells you hang from the doorknob. But the manufacturer said the floor bell was better for two reasons. First, you don’t have the dog scratching up your door. Second, you don’t have the bell going off every time someone goes in and out the door, which prevents confusion to the dog and annoying false alarms to the people in the house. I think this is a great idea.

The Eye Pack from Happy Tails Spa Products. Are they shipped off to the kennel or handed off to the reluctant neighbors? Do you fret away those precious last minute packing moments making desperate phone calls to friends and family?

Rather than partake in all that sturm and drang, take a gander at PawSpot. This is a community for pets and their owners whose main aim is to coordinate pet sitting. Of course, it’s not meant to be a sort of blind dating like service where you’d entrust your furry family members to some stranger you met on the web.

Instead PawSpot invites you and your friends to join so that you can easily coordinate and take turns minding the pets. The site also features pet play dates, whereby anyone can request some playtime with other pets on the site. And what would a pet site be without photos? There are tons of cuddly, cute snapshots for pet enthusiasts to grin at. Additional nifty features include bulletins, profiles, expert advice, park descriptions, and discussion forums.

Pretty much, this is a new social networking site for pet owners. Any thoughts on Pawspot.com?

PawSpot | Launches | Start Up | Dogs
Social Networking | Pet Sitting | KillerStartup.com | Neighbors
Coordinate | Web 2.0
Pet Friendly | Cody | Havana | Doghouse Properties

Greenies Lawsuit Settled

Personally, I don't feed Cody and Havana Greenies. I tend to pass on products whose ingredients I can't easily pronounce. But, for some reason American consumers are drawn to the Greenies product - despite the fact that its formula has been linked to the deaths of dogs.

Businessweek.com reported:

The makers of Greenies, one of the nation's best-selling dog treats, have settled a class-action lawsuit claiming the teeth-cleaning product injured or killed close to a dozen dogs.

U.S. District Judge Gary Fenner on Monday agreed with a joint request to dismiss the case.

Alan Sash, who represented 10 dog owners against Kansas City-based manufacturer S&M NuTec, said the case was settled but the terms were confidential.

An attorney for S&M NuTec, which was acquired last year by McLean, Va.-based candy conglomerate Mars Inc., also declined further comment.

"All issues between the parties have been resolved," said Laura Fey.
Greenies are hard, dark green treats shaped like a bone on one end and a toothbrush on the other. Designed to scrub dogs' teeth while being chewed, the treats have become extremely popular in recent years, with pet owners snapping up more than 300 million a year.

But beginning in 2005, media outlets began carrying stories of pet owners claiming their dogs either choked on pieces of Greenies or suffered medical problems when undigested pieces became trapped in their intestines. A CNN report last year estimated at least 13 dogs had died of Greenies-related problems.

In their lawsuit, Sash's clients claimed S&M NuTec, the company that invented the treats, knew of the dangers Greenies posed for dogs but refused to adequately warn consumers or pull the treats from the shelves.

The company repeatedly said Greenies were safe when used as directed, which included buying dogs the correct size of treat and making sure the animal adequately chewed it and didn't gulp it down.

Still, the company changed the packaging of Greenies to make its warnings more visible and came out with a new formula late last year that it said was more digestible and designed to break down into smaller pieces during chewing.
Do you feed your dog Greenies? Why do you like the product?

Greenies | Lawsuit | Settled | Class Action
Dog Treat | Teeth Cleaning | Too Bad
Undigestible | Warnings | Dogs
Pet Friendly | Cody | Havana | Doghouse Properties

Top 10 Popular Dog & Cat Names

According to Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), the nation's oldest
and largest provider of pet health insurance, Max is the most popular dog
and cat name for the fifth consecutive year. No matter how much we plan ahead, the job of moving is stressful. And as a pet owner, I can appreciate the planning required when moving to a new home with pets. From pre-move pet planning to considering a pet mover, this article will walk you through it step by step.

Pre-move pet planning
Contact the State Veterinarian’s Office or the State Department of Agriculture to request the pet laws and regulations of your destination state.

Contact the local office of the City Clerk to request information on pet ordinances. There may be “leash laws,” license requirements, and household pet limitations. Manying zoning laws prohibit certain “pets,” such as pigs, goats, venomous snakes, or monkeys in apartments, condominiums, and residential communities.

Check your apartment lease or condominium complex rules to make sure you are in compliance with the community’s pet regulations and rules, i.e., some condos allow one dog weighing less than 20 lbs. per household.

Request your pet’s health records from your veterinarian so you will have them on hand when you register with your new vet.

Take a current photo of your pet with you at the time of the move in the unfortunate event your pet is lost.

However you are traveling put a collar with ID tag on your pet that in the very least includes the pet’s name, your name, and your new address. Your best bet is to get tags and advice from your vet who can help you include a rabies tag on the collar if needed as most states require this. You can also seek assistance from a state animal control agency.

Ask your veterinarian if a Health Certificate is required for your pet in your destination state. If so, this certificate can only be issued by a licensed veterinarian and must be accompanied by current inoculation records.

If you own an exotic pet, your vet can help you verify if you need a permit to enter the destination state with your pet and assist you in applying for one.

Animals love routine. If you choose to take your animal with you by car, be sure to bring along a few of their favorite toys, treats, and blanket.

Deciding how to move your pet
How should you transport your pet to its new home? By air, ground transport, or in your car? If you are not equipped to provide lots of tender loving care to your pet during a cross-country trip, perhaps it’s better to hire a professional pet mover to take your animal to its new home by truck or air. If you are flying to your new destination, it’s probably preferable and always more cost-effective to just take your pet with you.

However you decide to move your little friend, a sturdy, secure carrier that is spacious enough for your pet to move around in, lie down, and stand up in is paramount. Make sure it has adequate cross-ventilation and a leak-proof base that you can layer with absorbent lining.

Taking your pet on the road
If you decide to take the family pet on the road trip to your new home, you’ll save money and help your animal feel secure amid the changes. Taking your pet on the road can be an enjoyable experience provided you plan accordingly.

Make sure your pet is comfortable traveling by car or take it out on some short “road trips” to get it used to it. If your pet is prone to motion sickness, discuss the situation with your veterinarian who can prescribe medication to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.

Feed your pet and provide it water a few hours before you leave and feed it only once daily, if possible, while on the road. Bring along bottled water to avoid upset stomachs.

If you are traveling with a dog, make periodic stops so you can take it for walks on a leash and provide it with water as needed.

Keep power windows up and locked to prevent the animal from inadvertently lowering the window and jumping or falling out.

Keep your pets cool inside the car, especially when it’s hot outside to keep them comfortable and prevent motion sickness. Small animals, such as gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs are sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

Do not leave your pet unattended in the car unless you are within eyesight and for a brief period. In that case, crack the windows and make sure the air temperature is moderate and there is plenty of water for your pet.

If you plan to stay in hotels for overnight stops, contact lodgings in advance to be certain they are pet-friendly establishments.

Keep a plentiful supply of bottled water, disinfectant, room deodorizer, and paper towels in the car as well as an extra leash. If you are traveling with a dog, extra cleanup bags and a scooper are a must.

Keep your pet’s favorite toys and blanket nearby at all times.

Traveling by air
If you decide to fly your pet to its new destination, federal regulations require using a carrier that has a secure closing mechanism that can be opened in case of emergency. You will not be permitted to lock the carrier during the flight. As soon as you decide to fly with your pet, make sure you check with the airlines about carrier and pet requirements and restrictions. For instance, an exotic animal such as a venomous snake may not be allowed on the plane.

To ensure that your pet is as safe and comfortable as possible during the flight, here are a few more tips:

Most airlines offer reasonably priced approved carriers for sale with at least 48-hour notice. If you decide to purchase an authorized kennel from an airline, you can rest assured that these carriers meet all pet transportation requirements as designated by the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) and International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Leave your carrier out at home for a few weeks to give your pet a chance to get familiar with it. Tuck your pet’s favorite toys or blanket in it, to entice him or her into getting comfortable in the carrier.

Make sure your pet is on the same flight you are taking.

If you are taking a small dog or a cat with you, ask the airlines if your pet can travel on board with you rather than in the cargo area and inquire about any related requirements.

Book a direct flight so you do not have to worry about any mishaps that can occur when changing flights.

Have your pet’s nails clipped before the flight to ensure the pet’s safety as well as the safety of any person who may need to handle the pet.

Consult with a trusted veterinarian about whether you should consider giving your pet tranquilizers during the trip.

Carry a photo of your pet with you at all times in case your pet is lost during the trip and fasten two IDs to your pet’s collar: one with the pet’s name, your name, and new address, and another temporary travel ID that lists your pet’s name and your name or a contact’s name, address, and a telephone number where someone can be immediately contacted in case of emergency.

Feed your pet five or six hours before the flight and provide it water up to two hours before takeoff, except in the case of a very hot day.

When should you consider a professional pet mover?

If your pet requires special handling due to illness, or you believe the stress of taking it on a long road trip on route to your new home might be too stressful for the animal, you may wish to consider hiring professional pet movers to transport your pet to its new home. Buses, trains, and traditional movers are not legally permitted to move pets, with the exception of Seeing Eye dogs. You can ask your veterinarian for a referral or look in the yellow pages and ask a business for references.

Moving your pet into your new home
Once you arrive at your new home, designate an empty room for your pet. In it put the open carrier, its food, water, toys, and blanket. Visit your pet periodically and remain calm in its presence. Also, let it get used to the back yard if you have one. Keeping your pet away from the hustle and bustle of moving-in day as much as possible will help it feel more secure while it’s getting used to its new surroundings. Once everything settles down, you can open the door to your pet’s room and it will join the rest of the family when it is ready. The sooner you can re-establish its set routines in the new house, the better. Before you know it, your pet will feel right at home in the new house.

Moving | Pet | Pet Friendly | Renters | Dog Parks
Veterinarian | Pet Resume | Training | Apartment
Landlord | Cody | Havana | Doghouse Properties
