Yorkies Have Their Year! Tiny Toy Overtakes Venerable Favorites — Golden Retriever And German Shepherd — As Second Most Popular Dog In America
- Labrador Retriever Continues to Reign Supreme -
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® announced today that the Yorkshire Terrier, fondly called the “Yorkie” by millions of enthusiasts, has overtaken the beloved Golden Retriever and the iconic German Shepherd Dog to become the second most popular purebred dog in America according to AKC® registration figures. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in the country once again—a spot it has held since 1991.
“We have been closely tracking dog ownership trends and AKC data reveals that the popularity of smaller breeds continues to grow over the last decade,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Not since the Boston Terrier* hit the top nearly 70 years ago has a small breed worked its way to such a high spot on the list.”
“Dogs have become a fixture in the American family. The recent rise of the Yorkie proves that many modern dog owners prefer a portable, pint-sized pet that fits their modern, fast-paced lifestyle,” added Peterson.
Despite the prevalence of the Yorkie and the increased popularity of other small breeds, the Top 10 once again includes four large breeds all known for their intelligence, versatility and ability to be a loving family companion — the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever and Boxer. The German Shepherd Dog rose in popularity to third in 2006.
TRENDS: 1915 - TODAY To get a feel for trends over a longer period of time, the AKC analyzed nearly 100 years of registration data and looked at popularity based on group classification, size, grooming requirements and activity levels:**
Group: The Sporting group (Retrievers, Pointing breeds, Setters and Spaniels) is currently the most popular, making up nearly 30% of the 2006 registry. This group peaked in popularity in the 1940’s with 43% of the registry.
The Toy group has been steadily on the rise since the 1970’s, when it made up only 12% of the registry versus 23% today.
The Working group peaked in the 1990’s at 17%, most notably due to the Rottweiler being in the top 10 at that time, including several years in the number 2 spot.
The popularity of the Terrier group has steadily decreased, going from nearly 27% of the registry to only 6% this year.
Hounds have remained the most consistent—at about 8% since 1915 through today.
Size: Small breeds dipped to a low of 18% in the 1940’s and have grown to 29% of the registry today.
Despite fluctuations throughout the middle of the century (including holding the highest percentage of the registry ever at 58% in the 1940’s) medium-sized breeds remain at approximately 22% today, the same percentage as in 1915.
Large breeds make up the bulk of the registry today (45%) as a result of the Labrador Retriever being in the top spot.
Grooming: Dogs with low grooming requirements have been steadily on the rise since the 1970’s while dogs that require more grooming have declined sharply during the same period. Dogs with average grooming requirements remained steady.
In 2006, nearly 48% of the registry was made up of dogs considered to have low grooming needs, versus only 30% in the 1960’s (Poodles were the top-ranked dog in this time period.)
Dogs with high grooming requirements were most popular in the 1940’s.
Activity: Dogs that require a high level of activity (lots of exercise) make up nearly half of the registry today, vs. 35% in 1915.
High energy breeds, such as the Airedale Terrier and Dalmatian peaked in the 1960’s at 61%.
Today, breeds with an average activity level comprise 43% of the registry while low activity breeds make up only 7%.
TOP 50 CITIES: The AKC also looked at the Top 10 breeds in the nation’s 50 largest cities. To find your city visit http://www.akc.org/reg/topdogsbycity.cfm. Some key findings:
Among major U.S. cities, the Bulldog makes the Top 10 in 27 cities, followed by the Pug in 22 cities, the Rottweiler in 15 cities, the Chihuahua in 14 cities and the Pomeranian in eight cities.
Other breeds that made multiple appearances on the local lists but were not in the national Top 10 include the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, German Shorthaired Pointer, Shetland Sheepdog, Maltese, English Springer Spaniel and the Boston Terrier.
Knoxville is the only major city in America with the same Top 10 breeds as the national list.
Milwaukee is the only city that does not include the popular Yorkshire Terrier on its local Top 10 list.
AKC registration statistics are compiled from Jan. 1- December 31 of the previous year. In 2006, AKC registered 153 different breeds.
* In 1939, the Boston Terrier was the second most popular dog in America. The Boston was consistently ranked #1 or #2 throughout the early part of the twentieth century. Small dogs are defined as breeds weighing an average of less than 20 lbs.
**Average breed size, grooming requirements and activity levels were determined by a panel of dog experts.

Severe allegations of animal cruelty have Michael Vick, an NFL superstar, in serious legal trouble. Investigations have revealed harsh treatment of mostly pit bulls on Vick's property, including dogs being electrocuted, hung, shot at, and worse. The details are just horrifying. Moreover, Vick is allegedly heavily involved in an underground dog fighting world most of us could never imagine existing.
Several Animal Activists groups, such as HSUS, are petitioning companies like Nike, which have endorsement contracts with Vick to cancel them. The AJC in Atlanta reports that PETA protested Vick's suspension and removal from the NFL. The picture above shows just one of confiscated dogs. This dog's heart-breaking face is cut up, sore, and raw from the abuse he faced while involved in this dog fighting ring.
It makes us sick to even think that people can be so barbaric and encourage dogs to fight to their death. If convicted of illegal dogfighting, a felony charge, Vick could face 4 to 6 years in prison and over a $350k fine. He helped torture animals, bashed dogs heads, and watched as they attacked each other until one was proclaimed a winner. What a disgusting role model.
If you suspect dog fighting, please contact your local authorities or the Humane Society of The United States.

Hybrid Dogs, also known as Designer Dogs, are on the rise. What exactly is a Hybrid Dog you say? Take 2 pure breed dogs (different breeds of course) and mate them - viola, a hybrid dog. While some may call the mix between a Poodle and a Yorkie a mutt, many are now calling this designer dog a "Yorkiepoo".
So why are these pure breed mutts considered designer dogs with price tags topping over $2000 per dog? The cute names of course. All kidding aside, a designer dog does offer the best of both breeds involved. For example, a Poodle & Golden Retriever (Goldendoodle) hybrid combines the hypo-allergenic hair of a poodle, with the great temperament of a Golden Retriever.
Here are some examples of recent Designer Dog names which fetch these expensive price tags: Affenpoo: Affenpinscher/poodle Bassetoodle: Basset hound/poodle Brat: American rat terrier/British rat terrier Cavapoo: Cavalier King Charles spaniel/poodle Corkie: cocker spaniel/Yorkie Doodleman Pinscher: Doberman/standard poodle Dorkie: dachshund/Yorkshire terrier Goberian: golden retriever/Siberian husky Miniature Schnoxie: daschund/miniature schnauzer Puggle: pug/beagle Rattle: American rat terrier/poodle Rottle: Rottweiler/poodle Saint Berdoodle: Saint Bernard/poodle Sheltidoodle: Sheltie/poodle Shih-Poo: Shih Tzu/poodle Toy Poxer: pug/toy fox terrier Yorkipoo: Yorkie/poodle
While the American Kennel Club does not recognize hybrid dogs, nor will they allow them to compete in major Dog Shows in the US, another organization will. The American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes designer dogs with purebred ancestry. As always do extensive research before purchasing (or adopting) to make sure you have a healthy dog, from a responsible breeder.
Do you have a picture of a cute designer dog? If so, send it to us and tell us about your dog. We want to introduce the faces and characteristics behind these breeds to our readers...hope to hear from you soon!

According to Mercury News, Assemblyman Lloyd Levine a Democrat withdrew his bill which would require most dogs & cats to be spayed/neutered in the state of California.
The bill's author, Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Sherman Oaks, opted to withdraw his proposal rather than have it fail in the Senate Local Government Committee, where most lawmakers said during a hearing Wednesday that they were unhappy with the proposal.
The decision followed months of protest from breeders, service organizations and rural governments that opposed a mandatory six-month spay and neuter mandate as a way to control the pet population...
At least 25 states require that dogs and cats adopted from shelters be sterilized. Last year, Rhode Island passed a law requiring cats to be spayed or neutered by six months of age. Denver, Camden, N.J., New York and Fort Wayne, Ind., are among cities that have some kind of sterilization law. With all the criticism this Bill faced with many organizations in California, it is no surprise to me that it was withdrawn. But, I wonder if they will revisit this Bill (or a variation of it) in the near future...

According to The Nation online, Hillary Clinton is using Pets on her drive to the Presidency. If your pet is a supporter of Clinton, you can now post a picture of your pet on her website, VoteHillary.org.
Under the Hillary Movements tab on her main page, there is a link called "Pets for Hillary" which you can learn about the details of her quest to include Pets in her campaign. Photos that include her campaign memorabilia will be added to her "Pets for Hillary" Photo Gallery (i.e. posters, buttons, hats, etc).
The idea really hasn't caught on too rapidly in the pet community, as she only has 8 pages of pets (maybe max 50 pets). Regardless, I still think this is an interesting strategy to get more supporters...as we all know, people love their pets. But, do you think her "Pets for Hillary" movement will sway a voter that is on the fence to vote Clinton into office? What are your thoughts?

I received the Summer 2007 copy of the USAA Magazine which had an great article on how to teach kids to approach dogs safely. According to the author of the article, children are taught early on to be cautious of strangers, however, when they see a dog they think it is OK to play with it. Unfortunately, there are irresponsible pet owners who don't properly train their dog, which can lead to unruly behavior that can harm your child. So, I will share an excerpt of the article which discusses the proper steps to teach a child to approach dogs safely.
Teach every child who is interested in approaching a new dog to W-A-I-T. If you are not the owner, no petting, even if you know the dog. If the owner has a dog on a leash, follow these steps:
W- Wait and watch to assess a dog's body language. If the dog looks angry or afraid, stop and walk away slowly.
A- Ask the owner's permission to pet the dog. If yes, then...
I- Invite the dog to sniff you by standing quietly with your hands curled at your sides. If the dog does not sniff you, then do not touch the dog.
T- Touch the dog gently, on the back only. (For young children who might have poor motor control, this is safer than petting the dog's head or chin. The W-A-I-T program is very similar to stranger-danger programs already taught to kids in elementary school. While we certainly know that responsible pet owners raise responsible dogs, there are owners who can not maintain control of their animal. As a result, teach your child early on how to greet a dog on a lease using the W-A-I-T program.

Recently, we have received a lot of phone calls from renters across the nation asking for help in finding pet friendly rentals. We aren't trying to discourage anyone from contacting us for help, but please understand we don't have any additional information than what is available on our website.

After blogging about MyDogSpace.com yesterday, I received an email from a company out of Estonia (in Europe, for those of you that don't know) by the name of UnitedDogs.com and UnitedCats.com.
This social networking site for dogs and cats recently launched about 5 weeks ago and already has over 2000+ dogs joined. Some features of UnitedDogs.com include the ability to upload up to 50 large photos to a profile, pets can have their own blog setup, users can comment on other users pictures, and more.
Surprising to me, UnitedDogs.com & UnitedCats.com claims Dogster.com only has 1% of the potential market. In a Press Release I received, the team boldly states, "there's a lot we can do better than Dogster does." I hope they live up to the challenge - those are big shoes to fill and time will only tell who survives.
We hope the UnitedDogs.com team keeps us updated on their milestones...we love to see pets socializing with other pets online -- eventhough, we really know the site is more for the pet owner!

Recently, MyDogSpace.com, a social community for dogs to share photos, blogs, and other dog related info launched on the world wide web. Created by the people behind DateMyPet.com, MyDogSpace.com appears to already have a decent amount of dog lovers using the site and have a similar concept to MySpace.com.
While the site doesn't really differ much from the already popular dog lover's community site Dogster.com, they have a lot of potential. Unfortunately, they have a long way to go in order to catch up to Dogster's huge fan base. We are interested to see how the internet community welcomes them.
MyDogSpace.com is also planning on releasing MyCatSpace.com in the near future. Can we say "Catster.com" anyone?
PetsInCommon.com is another recent social community site dedicated to dogs and their owners. PetsInCommon.com doesn't really differ too much from other sites out there, but both owner and pet are allowed to have a profile side-by-side.
Visit these sites and tell us what you think. We've found MySpace.com the easiest for building a "pet" profile for Cody & Havana.

2008 stands to be an interesting year with the Presidential elections. So, we felt compelled to pass this blog entry from Itchmo.com. According to Itchmo.com : Presidential candidate factoids:
Out of 14 hopefuls, 9 presidential candidates currently have pets. Only 2 have a cat and a dog. Democratic candidates have 9 pets. Republican candidates have 31 pets. John McCain leads the pack (or zoo) with 22 pets.
Democratic Presidential Candidates and Their Pets
Joe Biden: Delaware Senator, 1 cat Hillary Rodham Clinton: New York Senator, 1 dog: Seamus (Labrador retreiver) Chris Dodd: Connecticut Senator, None: States "family’s allergies" as the issue, but said "would like a dog". John Edwards: Former North Carolina Senator, 2 dogs: A Golden retriever, and a chocolate Labrador retriever Dennis Kucinich: Ohio Representative, 3 dogs: Harry (beagle-basset), Lucie (beagle) and George (cocker spaniel). Barack Obama: Illinois Senator, None: Says he’s "facing pressure" to get a dog from the kids.
Bill Richardson: New Mexico Governor, 2 cats: Jake and "Squeaky"
Republican Presidential Candidates and Their Pets
Sam Brownback: Kansas Senator, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 1 fish
Rudy Giuliani: Former New York Mayor, None. "No Comment."
Mike Huckabee: Former Arkansas Governor, 2 dogs: Jet (black Labrador retriever) and Sonic (Shih Tzu) Duncan Hunter: California Representative, 2 dogs: Boo (black Labrador retriever) and Hunter (black Labrador retriever).
John McCain: Arizona Senator, 1 cat: Oreo (black and white cat), 2 dogs: Sam (English springer spaniel) and Coco (mutt), 13 fish (saltwater), 1 ferret, 3 parakeets and 2 turtles: Cuff, and Link Mitt Romney: Former Massachusetts Governor, None: Family recently lost Marley, a Weimaraner. Read about family dog Seamus’ 12-hour ordeal on top of Romney’s car.
Tom Tancredo: Colorado Representative, None: Unknown.
P.S. Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney strapped his Irish setter to the top of the car, on a 1983 family trip. He defends his actions and says the dog enjoyed it. The dog developed gastrointestinal distress from the 12 hour car ride, and managed to "let it loose" down the car's back window. If you ask me, that is a stupid decision to defend and pretty inhumane. You don't even want to know what PETA has to say about it.
