Dr. Martin Goldstein (Dr. Marty) is considered by many experts, and thousands of satisfied clients, to be America’s foremost holistic veterinarian. He appeared on Oprah this week and educated the audience about the proper feeding of animals, especially dogs. The recent pet food recalls have brought to light many important issues about pet food manufacturers and the lack of quality ingredients used when creating pet food. Dr. Marty informed Oprah and viewers that the majority of dog kibble on the market is mostly carbohydrates and animals are not getting the proper nutrients.
Here is Dr. Marty's ideal feeding requirements for dogs classified in levels (#1 being the best, #7 being the worst):- Fresh raw meats combined with omega 3
- Fresh cooked meats & small amount of fresh vegetables combined with omega 3
- Ultra premium canned food which use only human quality ingredients and are grain free
- Super premium grain free dry food (kibble)
- Premium canned food which contain less meat
- Super Premium kibble which contain grains
- Grocery Store brands - canned or dry food -- if at all possible stay away from this!
Visit Dr. Marty's website and read more detailed information on why you should try to feed your dog Level 1-4 foods. Please read it, after all, his dog lived to be 19 years old! Try to at least feed your dog in Level 1-4 to ensure optimal health in your dog...anything less and you were probably affected by the recent pet food recalls. I was pretty disgusted by the descriptions of the levels on his website (note: Dr. Marty's website breaks down the 7 Levels he presented on Oprah's show into 11 levels for more detailed info).
I know I say it a lot, but I feed Cody & Havana Three Dog Bakery food which is considered level 3 & 4. Personally, unless you are Oprah, you will have a hard time affording level 1 & 2 because fresh food can be costly. I buy Three Dog Bakery's "Entrees for Dogs" at approximately $2.49 a pouch and put it on top of their Three Dog Bakery reduced calorie kibble every day. The vet tells us that they are in great health and aren't overweight -- pretty amazing for labradors!

Entrepreneur.com recently posted an article by Scott Brueggeman, publisher of www.CompleteLandlord.com, which I found to be a valuable resource for any current or aspiring landlord.
With approximately 10 million small and medium-sized landlords in the US, any property owner interested in renting their property to a tenant should find his information invaluable. Brueggeman believes that there are 5 essential steps in order to become a successful landlord:- Find tenants (or meet the current ones) by several advertising methods
- Screen Potential tenants using credit checks, references, criminal records, and previous rental history
- Use the proper legal forms to protect your investment
- Manage the day-to-day issues and get insurance
- Handle renewals and evictions properly
If being a landlord was easy, everyone would do it. It can be very profitable, but remember it can also be taxing at the same time. Visit Brueggeman’s website, www.CompleteLandlord.com, for more information on becoming a landlord. Also, consider renting your property to pet owners, as they account for approximately 50% of renters. In addition, you can advertise your long term pet friendly rental property on DogHouseProperties.com at no cost. You have nothing to loose except maybe your rental’s availability.

Over the past few weeks, several pet foods have been recalled due to potentially lethal wheat gluten. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has compiled a comprehensive list of the food involved in the recall:
http://www.avma.org/aa/menufoodsrecall/products.asp
If your pet shows signs of loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting or change in urination, consult a veterinarian immediately. The AVMA also urges you to stop feeding your pet any of the potentially contaminated pet food, and search for alternate brands.
Personally, we feed Havana & Cody Three Dog Bakery food who recently announced they have reformulated their food to not contain any wheat gluten. They do not import any of their ingredients from foreign nations & control their all natural, oven baked dog food in their own facility! Now that is peace of mind.
To learn more about the pet food recall visit avma.org.
