Creating a resume for your pet is critical when finding a pet friendly apartment. This is the single most important way you can demonstrate to a landlord how wonderful your pet is.
While there are resources, such as doghouseproperties.com, to help people find pet friendly apartments, the majority of landlords want to know that they are renting to a responsible owner. From a landlord's point of view, a pet resume allows you and your pet to stand out from other potential renters.
So what exactly should you include on a pet resume? Our favorite resource for pet resumes is the Humane Society of the United States, rentwithpets.org, which contains samples of pet resumes. Include a photo, a detailed description of their behavior, and training the pet has undergone. Also, list several references that can validate your pet's character.
On your pet's resume, include detailed descriptions of the following:- Spayed/neutered
- Graduate of XYZ obedience school
- Special training
- Dog is walked on a leash
- Pet is routinely groomes and bathed
- You maintain an ongoing relationship with XYZ veterinarian
- Pet is microchipped
- Pet has successfully lived in an apartment before
- Pet receives proper protection against fleas and ticks
- Pet is up to date on shots and licenses
- Pet wears ID tags at all times
- Pet does not bark
- Pet is house trained
And the list goes on and on... If you can demonstrate to your landlord that you are a responsible pet owner, you are one step closer to finding that next pet friendly apartment!

Moving with a pet appears harder than it really is. Even though half of all renters are pet owners, some renters don't know where to begin when moving with a pet.
In just a few easy steps, you can pack up with your pet and move to your new home in no time!- Research the area you are looking to move to... Is it pet friendly? Are any dog parks nearby? Where is the closest vets office?
- Compile a pet resume, which includes a photo, a description of their behavior, and any training the pet has undergone. More about a pet resume to come...
- Obtain letters of reference from neighbors, previous landlords, veterinarians, and even pet sitters.
- Visit your current veterinarian to make sure your pet is current on all their required shots and licenses.
- Search for your next pet friendly apartment home on doghouseproperties.com. This search engine for pet friendly apartments is rapidly growing!
- If your future landlord requests a meeting with your pet, make sure the pet is groomed and walked prior to the meeting (kind of like showered and shaved for humans)...
- You are done! On the day of the move make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible, as they are sensitive to change. Make sure their food, water, and favorites toys are readily available.
The key to having a successful move with your pet, is to plan ahead. Visit the Humane Society of the United States' website for more information, rentwithpets.org.
Happy Hunting!

Some may want to call them "pup cream" sandwiches, but ice cream sandwiches are about to make Cody & Havana sit and beg!
Good Humor, popular ice cream maker, and Pedigree pet food manufacturer have joined forces to produce these delicatable treats for dogs. It is sure to make any dog slober, as it doesn't have any sugar or added protein, and is limited to 1% lactose.
While we haven't heard about the release date to the public, we anxiously await its arrival! Ummm, yummy...

A Marion, Indiana woman found a creative way to raise money for her favorite pet charity... she spent 30 days living in a 4x7 foot kennel!
Cheryl Walters "kennel-ed up" to raise over $8000 for the Marion-Grant County Humane Society. As a member of the Humane Society's Board of Volunteers, she hopes people will donate additional money to help build a new shelter for stray and abandoned animals.
Dog-gone crazy for a human to kennel up in shelter made for an animal... but it was for a good cause!

Dogs, we know are part of the family... so much so, they are actively playing a ceremonial role in their owner's weddings!
Serving as a ring bearer, bridesmaids, and the best man, dogs are dressed to the K-9s! Many accesories such as tuxedos, bow ties, silk dresses, costume jewerly, and collars made from fresh flowers drape our pampered pooches. Wedding planners aren't surprised by the increase in pets, especially dogs, in weddings... in fact, some say it is a great way to personalize the big day.
While our owners aren't married yet, we've been told we'll play a big role in their wedding day celebration. I wonder what the cake will taste like, hummm...

I’ve moved around several times since I was brought home 7 years ago. Moving from house to house always proved to be a frustrating event for my parents, especially since they didn’t own their own home. Landlords didn’t agree with how large I was (a masculine 85 lbs), or how I wasn’t “fixed” (but that is another story for another day).
Finally, my mom decided to do something about how difficult it was for a pet owner to find a place to live; she created www.doghouseproperties.com. Did you know approximately 1 out of every 2 renters is a pet owner? Yeah, can you believe that?
We finally bought a house and don’t have to worry about finding a pet friendly landlord anymore. It gives us more time to work on finding pet friendly landlords for other people, all on our website, Doghouse Properties!!!
Havana joined our family a little over a year ago and is eagerly waiting for you to learn more online!
Havana and I plan on keeping you updated on everything pet related — from pet health & safety, product trends, and more. We sure do have a lot to bark about… so check back often!
